DECAY is an online experience drawing the parallels between the impact that electronic waste has on the environment and the environment in its natural state. Electronic waste is known to have a negative consequence for the environment as these electronic parts can contain toxic materials which can leak into the soil and groundwater if not recycled or disposed of properly. While our creations are poisoning the earth, nature’s natural processes are trying to continue their perfected cycle of decay and rebirth. Today, we are still facing a problem that has been defined over a century ago by the father transcendentalism, Ralph Waldo Emerson, who claimed that humans do not accept the beauty of nature and instead are distracted by the demands of society. This online experience highlights how planned obsolescence is a symptom of this problem that was named far too long ago, and how we as humans have not tried hard enough to resolve it.
